Kuselan review

How many times have you walked out of a theatre emotionally choked up after watching a Rajinikanth film? How many times have you seen Rajinikanth not uttering a punch dialogue in his films?  How many times have you not seen Rajinikanth flexing his muscles and bashing the baddies in his movie?

Watch ‘Kuselan’, where one can find a completely different Rajinikanth – the real Rajinikanth, the human being. The movie is perhaps an answer to his critics who have been criticizing the actor for doing routine 'commercial masalas'. Thanks to P Vasu, Rajinikanth reinvents himself bringing out the actor within him through this film. One thing is very clear. He has not acted to commercial compulsions.

The movie throws light on the real Rajinikanth, who has been quite a puzzle with millions of his fans. And the star himself answers questions that have been plaguing the minds of millions of his fans. Want to know the answers to why Rajini has not entered politics? Why the superstar often goes to the Himalayas? Why the actor still prefers to work in run-of-the-mill stuff?

‘Kuselan’ has got all the answers. With Rajinikanth by his side, P Vasu has come out with a message that is quite though provoking. The usual adage is 'Matha Pitha Guru Deivam'. With ‘Kuselan’ the adage gets an addition - 'Matha Pitha GuruNanban Deivam'.

He plays the 'Super Star' himself and does not at any time impose himself on screen. Watching Rajinikanth play the role with consummate ease is like watching Sachin Tendulkar on song at the middle of the crease. It's like listening to Beethoven's symphony sitting under the moonlight. Though the story doesn't revolve around Rajinikanth, he manages to leave his indelible presence on screen. Especially towards the climax, an emotional Rajinikanth identifies his friend recalling their good old innocent days. These are sequences that evoke tears to our eyes bring the human side of each of us to the forefront.

It is a tough task for an actor like Pasupathy to carry the entire burden on his shoulders acting alongside a scene stealer like Rajinikanth. As a poor barber, fighting for survival, he evokes all the sympathy.  Seemingly an extension of his role in ‘Veyyil’, Pasupathy passes out with flying colors. Hats off to him!

Meena as his caring wife is more of a realistic portrayal. She understands the emotional struggles of her husband and gives him the much needed solace and comfort. She sure manages to get under the skin of her character and has done an extremely good job.

Nayanthara plays herself in the film and executes the job entrusted to her quite well. She plays a heroine in films, who shoots for a movie alongside Rajinikanth. She fulfills the glamour quotient and serves the purpose indeed well. Vadivelu's comedy compliments the script well. His trick to get an audition with Rajinikanth, who is shooting in the village brings down the roof with laughter.

The movie boasts of a huge star cast including Livingston, M S Baskar, Sona, Geetha, Fathima Babu, Brahmanandham, Chinni Jayanth. All have significant parts to play in the film.

Prabhu plays a cameo while a host of stars including Sneha, Soundarya Rajinikanth, Suriya among others appear for the ‘Cinema Cinema’ song.

Kuselan is about two childhood friends, with one becoming the Numero Uno in the film industry, while the other lands up as a barber in a hamlet.

Balakrishnan alias Bala (Pasupathy) is a poor barber in a village. He leads a happy life with his wife Sreedevi (Meena) and his children, until a film crew lands in their village to shoot for a movie. Coming to know that Super Star Ashok Kumar (Rajinikanth) has come for shooting in the village, and also with the understanding that he is Bala's childhood friend, villagers flock to Bala's house with favors. A man with tremendous self dignity, Bala fears to meet Ashok Kumar thinking that he may not identify him. But, when the two meet after a long gap, the emotional drama between the pals, sets up an emotional 20-minute climax.

Complimenting Vasu's hard work are Arvindh Krishna's excellent cinematography and the brilliant musical score by G V Prakash Kumar. The catchy numbers ‘Om zarerare’ and ‘Cinema Cinema’ have especially been captured in an attractive manner by Aravindh Krishna. The background score towards the climax sets up the momentum.

Hats off to director P Vasu! The film-maker, who knows the knack of remaking a Malayalam hit in Tamil, has rendered a movie that has the right packaging of emotions. He has intelligently packaged the movie with commercial elements that a hardcore Rajinikanth fan would love without spoiling the crux.

Produced by Pushpa Kandaswamy and Vijayakumar, ‘Kuselan’ is a movie that would go down well with Rajinikanth fans and this is a great opportunity to see the real side of this spectacular actor though on celluloid.

Poi solla porom Review

All credits to director Vijay for faithfully remaking Khosla Ka Ghosla.

Dealing about land sharks in a busy city like Chennai, the movie has comical touch all through entertaining the audience.

Vijay has recreated the magic of Jaideep Sahini's original well to suit the Tamil audience. The movie starts with a funny scene and what is commendable is that the fun continues throughout. Talented stars like Nedumudi Venu, Cochin Haneefa, Nasser and Mouli have been ably supported by the young brigade.

Sathyanathan (Nedumudi Venu), a retired government employee in Chennai, decides to buy a piece of land to construct his dream house. His elder son Uppilinathan (Karthik), a computer engineer, plans to go abroad for work. His younger son Viswanathan (Om) is a carefree youth, leading a happy life.

Sathyanathan hopes that his sons would help him build his dream house on the newly purchased plot. Uppili applies for a US visa and decides to go for a name change. Sathyanathan gets a rude shock when he realizes he's been duped by the broker (Cochin Haneefa). The land has been occupied by a fraudulent businessman Baby (Nasser).

When all attempts by Sathyanathan to get back the land end in vain, Uppilinathan steps in. With the help of his friend Amritha (Piya) he enacts a drama featuring father whom everyone calls Daddy (Mouli). Uppili is aided by his visa agent Asif (Bosskey) - a former accomplice of baby. They hatch a clever scheme to beat Baby at his own game. Nedumudi Venu, Nasser and Mouli walk away with all honors. Mouli steals the show posing as a rich NRI businessman. Aravindh Krishna's cinematography, music by M G Sreekumar and Anthony's editing are the hallmarks of the movie.

Watch out for ‘Poi Solla Sorom’, produced by UTV and Four Frames, it is a movie for those who love comedy.

Kuruvi

Cast:Vijay, Trisha, Suman, Vivek, Manivannan, Malavika
Direction:Dharani
Production:Udhayanidhi
Music:Vidyasagar

Kuruvi Movie Review

Much was expected on Vijay starrer ‘Kuruvi’ since it brings back the successful ‘Gilli’ team. The Vijay, Trisha, Dharani and Vidyasagar quartet oozed abundance energy and ‘Gilli’ turned out to be a racy entertainer, going on to become a blockbuster.

When they teamed together again, obviously expectations soared to greater heights. Unfortunately, ‘Kuruvi’ has failed to live up to expectations and the pep and energy in ‘Gilli’ was sorely missed in ‘Kuruvi’.

Dharani, known for rendering right commercial elements in his movie, has handled a wafer-thin storyline. He has tried his best to sustain the momentum, which works out in parts.

All credit to Vijay, who manages to leave his screen presence in his usual self. He fights, romances and tries his hand at comedy. The actor with a mass fan-following has tried to play to the gallery.

The on-screen chemistry between Trisha and Vijay deserve a special mention. The bubbly Trisha fits the bill well. Though she has limited scope to perform, unlike ‘Gilli’, she is right there delivering one of her best. Suman continues from where he left in ‘Sivaji’. As a baddie, he performs what one expects of him. The scene stealer is Vivek, who with his usual punch lines walks away with applause.

Music composer Vidyasagar's groovy music is good specially the number Darna..., which will rock the front-benchers.

In a nutshell, the movie is about Vetrivel (Vijay), a racer in Chennai, who sets out to free his father Singamuthu (Manivannan) and his peers who are bonded laborers in a mine run by Kocha (Suman) and Konda Reddy (Ashish).

In the meantime, he also finds time to romance Kocha's sister Devi (Trisha), who falls in love when he comes to her brother's place in Malaysia as part of his mission.

Special pat to producer Udayanidhi Stalin for spending his might to bring grandeur on screen. Dharani, known for his commercially masalas, disappoints those expecting the same from him. It can be enjoyed only in parts.

‘Kuruvi’, a racy thriller loaded with romance and action, is a sure treat for Vijay fans.

Vallamai tharayo

Cast:Parthiban, Chaya Singh
Direction:Madhumitha
Production:Sudararaman
Music:Bharadwaj

Vallamai Tharayo Review

‘Vallamai Tharayo’ is a poetic title. So is the attempt by debutant director Madhumitha with imageries and metaphorical representations. She has come out with a film that is set on family-values and a unique bondage shared by a couple.

The movie reminds one of Mouna Ragam. The Mohan - Revathi episode from the film seems to have inspired Madhumitha. But she has carefully laced her script with powerful dialogues and quick turn of events.

Madhumitha deserves credit for breaking away from the commercial format of film-making. However the characters lack depth and narration is very slow reminding one of the soap shows on Tamil satellite channels.

Anand (Parthiban) and Nandita (Chaya Singh) are newly married. But Nandita, who is unable to forget her aunt's son whom she is in love with, wants to estrange from Anand. Nandita manages to obtain divorce and starts to lead an independent life. Unable to forget Nandita, Anand sets out on a mission to convince her and start life afresh.

It is a typical Parthiban. He utters one-liners which are witty. Tailor-made for the character, he shoulders a major burden of the film. Comedy comes comfortably for the actor-director.

Chaya Singh, who is identified with the peppy number Manmadharasa, has really taken off to the next level in terms of her acting. She has emoted very well in the film. Madhumitha has extracted the best out of the actress and Chaya Singh on her part has not let down her director.

Anandhraj as Chaya Singh's father fits the bill well. Srikanth plays a cameo. Music director Bharadwaj has comes up with a couple of melodies. However his background score fail to provide the right fillip to the script.

Dialogue is an impact-making aspect of the film. They are sharp and have in-depth meaning.

On the whole, the movie has have missed out some tricks on the enthralling part, but Madhumitha's sincere approach and hard work deserve a pat.

subramaniapuram

Cast:Jay, Swathy, Ganja Karuppu, Sasi Kumar, Samudhirakani
Direction:Sasi Kumar
Production:Sasi Kumar
Music:James Vasanthan
Website:http://www.subramaniyapuram.com/

Can a movie be made in an interesting and crisp format in spite of a boasting of a huge star cast?

Director Sasikumar, who had his tutelage under Bala and Ameer, has proved that a quality entertainer can be made with less-known faces provided the movie has interesting storyline with the right amount of twists.

Designed in a retro classic style, Sasikumar portrays Madurai in a different color and with a new perspective. As the title suggests, the entire movie is set in Subramaniapuram, a hamlet in Madurai.

The story, set in the 80s, takes place in Madurai Subramaniapuram, a suburb of the city. Movies like Palaivana Cholai dwelt around four friends. Perhaps Sasikumar impressed by such classics, has made an attempt of chronicling the life of a group of friends.

They are fun-loving and carefree, who spend most of their time together. Jai, Kanja Karuppu and Sasikumar (the director himself), are typical youths, who do not miss an opportunity to fight when they come across a brawl on the streets. Often arrested, they come out of jail with the help of a neighbor, played by Samudhirakani. The neighbor's elder brother happens to be a former Councilor.

The irony is that Jai falls in love with the Councilor's daughter. When the councilor is ditched by a member of an opposite gang, the trio step in and bump off the man. Unfortunately Samudhirakani doesn't help them this time and the three are remanded for murder. However, they manage to come out themselves.

They then vow to settle scores with Samudhirakani and the Councilor. The revenge plot has enough twists and turns.

A movie is loaded with fun and suspense all through and is pleasant to watch coming across as a whiff of fresh air amidst commercial clichés. Sasikumar and Jai impress. Their body language and diction of the Madurai Tamil are noteworthy.

Due credit should be given to music composer James Vasanthan, a television anchor-turned-music director. He has reminded everyone of Ilayaraja during his heydays, James Vasanthan's background score is scintillating.

Sasikumar is a welcome addition to the list of talented directors taking centre stage in Tamil cinema in recent days.

’Subramaniapuram’ is a must-watch movie for those who love realism in Tamil Cinema.

Aegan

Aegan Movie Review

It was the much-expected movie, much talked about and waited with anticipation by Ajith-fans. A remake of Hindi hit Main Hoon Na, Aegan eventually proved to be a movie which is packed with punch but lacked crunch.

Doing a remake is no easy task. Choreographer-director Raju Sundaram should have understood it by now. He has tried to retain the flavour of the original, but could sustain it only in parts.

The USP of 'Main Hoon Na' was Farah Khan's intelligent characterisation of Shahrukh. He was humourous and was bubbling with enthusiasm all through the film – be it romance or the stunts.

In contrast, Ajith looks a bit stiff in Aegan and gives a look that he is kind of keeping things to himself. His reminds one of the ruthless don, that he played in his last 'Billa'. But due credit should be given to the actor for he shoulders the entire movie and comes out unscathed at many sequences.

Ajith is in full flow taking on the baddies. The role of an undercover, which is loaded with action is new for Ajith and it should be enjoyable for his fans.

The first half is entertaining loaded with humour with Jayaram hogging the limelight. In the company of Sathyan, he comes up with one-liners that is sure to tickle the funny bone. However, a tall actor like Jayaram, seems to have no significant say in the story.

Sathyan and Haneefa fit the bill well. Their situational comedy evokes boundless laughter. Nayanthara, who spelt a magic on screen opposite in Billa, seems to have missed the magic wand this time.  She manages to entice the audience in skimpy costumes and sings romantic duets at Alps mountains of Switzerland. Her character reminds one that Jyothika had enacted with charm and dignity in Khaakha Khaakha.

Coming to the clichés, there can be none but the baddie played by Suman. He reminds one of typical villains in several cinemas right from MGR days. With a funny wig, he delivers what is expected of him.

Shiva (Ajith) is a gutsy policeman, who bumps off a don in Hong Kong. A dare-devil young angry cop, he comes to Indian with a mission. He has been entrusted with the job of puytting an end to a notorious gangster John Chinappa (Suman), searched by Interpol.

John Chinnappa is behind his ex-associate Ram Prasad (Devan), who becomes an approver with police.

Fearing Chinappa, Ram goes on hiding. Shiva comes to a school in Udhagamandalam (Ooty) where Ram's daughter Priya (Piaa) studies. Shiva disguises his identity only join the college and protect Priya. The college has Jayaram as college principal and his aide Sathyan evoking laughter.  Narain (Navdeep) studies in the same college romances Priya. Eventually it is learnt that Narain is none but Shiva's brother. Does Shiva accomplish his task or not forms the crux.

The onscreen chemistry shared by Ajith and Nayanthara is ok. But half-a-dozen songs , a majority around the lead pair, puts brake on the movie's progress. Yuvanshankar's music passes the muster. The song caught on Alps is eye-catchy. Cinematographer Arjun Jena captures the action moments in a neat way without straining the eyes.

Produced by Ayngaran, the maiden attempt by Raju Sundaram reminds one of master blaster Sachin Tendulkar dismissed when nearing his century, disappointing his fans.

Saroja

Banner:     Amma Creations
Cast:S.P.B. Charan, Siva, Kajal Agarwal, Premji Gangai Amaran, Vaibhav, Vega, Prakash Raj, Jayaram
Direction:   Venkat PrabhuMusic:Yuvan Shankar Raja

Saroja Review :

Fun, frolic and mayhem were in abundance in Venkat Prabhu's first directorial venture 'Chennai 600028'. With his second film 'Saroja' the director dutifully follows the same pattern despite having the backdrop of a thriller featuring a kidnap, gun totting desperados and characters with malicious intent.

Even with a no-way-out situation that four friends get themselves into, and with the events unfolding in a real time sequential order, there is still scope for laughs. Premji Amaran's good-for-nothing attitude in the film amalgamated with silly remarks, 'Mirchi' Siva's ever so casual comic remarks, the intense demeanor of Sampath as a bad guy, Prakash Raj as the doting father of a kidnapped daughter, Vega as the kidnapped girl Saroja and Jayaram as the Assistant Commissioner of Police impress in their respective roles. One of the movie's strengths is that all these characters are introduced quickly in such a way that audiences easily understand the roles played by them except when the twists in the film happen.

Major strengths for 'Saroja' are in the form of some breathtaking and spectacular background score from Yuvan Shankar Raja (probably one of his bests so far), slick editing from Praveen K. L and Srikanth N. B (they have a long way to go) and excellent cinematography by Sakthi Saravanan.

Four friends with diverse natures but similar interests decide to travel to Hyderabad from Chennai to watch a cricket match. A huge tanker lorry heads towards South India from the North and a vicious gang has kidnapped a rich girl and holds her for ransom. All these events are narrated sequentially with the backdrop of the Chaos Theory.

The tanker lorry capsizes creating a complete traffic jam that has the makings of an all night stand-still. Our protagonists stuck in traffic decide to get to Hyderabad through a short cut and eventually get lost. They end up in the den of the vicious gang who hold the daughter of the millionaire captive.

The capsizing of the tanker lorry and the vibrant adventurous nature of the young protagonists make all these three events that should have been isolated amalgamate with each other. The butterfly effect is at work here.
